3 sources of support for divorcing parents

Divorce can be tough, especially as a parent of school-age children. On top of all the stress divorce can bring, you may well feel guilty about how it will affect your children.

At times like this, it is important to take advantage of the support available. Here are three places you might find it.

1. Your children’s teachers

Aside from parents, their teachers are the people who spend the most time with your children at this stage of their life. Letting them know you are divorcing allows them to keep an extra eye on your children and inform you of any worrying signs they see that the divorce is affecting them.

2. Your children’s classmate’s parents

You have likely met the parents of your children’s classmates on several occasions. Maybe you have attended the start-of-the-year meeting together, or perhaps you have watched together as your children played sports or acted in the Christmas play. Some of them may be only too happy to help you with things such as giving the children a lift to sports practice or picking them up from the school bus when you are busy with divorce matters or can’t count on your co-parent to do it.

3. Your friends and family

Family and friends can be a great source of support through a divorce. They can do anything such as take the kids for a day or weekend, help with school pick-ups, or just be there to listen to you by phone or over coffee. Getting support for yourself will better enable you to support your children.

You should also seek support of the legal kind. As much as divorce is a personal matter, it is also a legal one. Learning more about what you need to do and the options available can help you build a more positive future for yourself and your children
